  • Author: Christine

Description

This Smothered Cheesy Sour Cream Chicken is a delicious and comforting dish made with tender chicken breasts topped with a creamy, tangy sour cream mixture and layers of gooey mozzarella and savory Parmesan cheese. The dish is seasoned with oregano and garlic powder, giving it a subtle aromatic flavor that perfectly complements the richness of the cheese. Baked to golden, bubbly perfection, this dish is ideal for a cozy family dinner or a special gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
  • 4 slices of mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Arrange the chicken breasts in the prepared baking dish.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine sour cream, ½ cup of the Parmesan cheese, cornstarch, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir until smooth.
  • Place a slice of mozzarella cheese on top of each chicken breast.
  • Evenly spread the sour cream mixture over the chicken, covering it completely, then sprinkle the remaining ¼ cup Parmesan cheese on top.
  • Bake for 60 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the cheese is golden and bubbly. The internal temperature of the chicken should reach 165°F (75°C).
  • Let the dish stand for a few minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

  • Customization: Feel free to adjust the recipe to your taste by adding different herbs and spices to the sour cream mixture, such as fresh thyme, basil, or a pinch of paprika for a hint of spice.
  • Make-Ahead: You can prepare the dish up to 24 hours in advance and store it in the fridge before baking, making it a perfect option for meal prep or entertaining guests.
  • Leftovers: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 300°F (150°C) and cover with foil to retain moisture.
